The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned Nigerians to avoid frozen chicken.

The agency noted that the frozen products have been preserved with formalin before illegally smuggled into the country.

Formalin is a poisonous chemical popularly used to preserve the human body in mortuaries and it is also a known cancer-causing agent.

Spokesman for NAFDAC, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, made this known in an interview with NAN.

According to him, some business owners are using formalin to preserve poultry products, especially chicken and turkey.

“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians to this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, despite Federal Government’s ban,” Jimoh said.

He however, advised Nigerians to patronise local poultry farmers to enable indigenous businesses grow.
