A total of 240 golfers from across Nigeria are billed to compete at a two-day golf tournament in honour of the former captain of Ibadan Golf Club, Col. Ade Sunmonu (retd.).

Sunmonu made the disclosure during a press briefing at the Ibadan Golf Club on Monday, saying the tournament, which holds from September 18 to 19, was meant to mark his stewardship as captain of the club in the last one year.

He said, “The Captain’s Day event should have happened in March but we had to shift it to a safer time due to COVID-19. Having looked at the environment, we felt we could do it now.

“We’ve made provision for 240 golfers, including professionals like David Owoyemi, Emeka Obi and Lateef Lasisi. We are expecting golfers from the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT. What we will be experiencing here is golf played at its finest level.”

On adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures during the game, Sumonu added, “The club was initially locked down and decontaminated to make it habitable for everyone. We have everything required to make everyone safe. Right from the entrance, temperature would be checked before proceeding to the hand washing arena and hand sanitisers would be used.

“Everyone is expected to wear a facemask and maintain social distancing. On the course, there is social distancing because you don’t move together; you move in the direction of your ball.”
