Steps to protect yourself during flood - Federal Fire Service

Descriptive purpose only Descriptive purpose only

The rainy season is here already and we are already experiencing flood in some parts of the country. Floods can occur anywhere, but usually, they occur around floodplains. Whether you live in a flood-prone area or not, take the following steps to protect yourself during flood.

* Turn off all electrical appliances. Whether there is light or not. Preferably switch appliances off from the main circuit. * Move important items to an upper floor ( if you still have time and if there’s an upper floor). If not, just get to safety.

* Do not park your vehicle along bodies of water. * If you get trapped in a flood, Call @fedfireng, NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency), SEMA (State Emergency Management Agency) or the State Fire Service, to immediately effect a rescue.

* Move to higher ground while you still can, do not try to carry lots of things that could hinder your movement. * Do not walk through moving water. * If you are driving and come across a flooded road, Turn around, don’t drown.

If driving and water begin to rise around your vehicle, abandon it and move to higher ground if you can do so safely. If your vehicle is trapped in moving water, stay in your vehicle. If water is rising inside, seek refuge on the roof.

People often underestimate the power of floodwaters. As little as six inches of moving water can make you fall, and two feet of water can carry away most vehicles, including trucks and SUVs.
