Popular Nigerian artiste Reekado Banks has opened up on his exit from Mavin Records, admitting that departing the label was a premature decision.
The singer, born Ayoleyi Hanniel Solomon, joined Don Jazzy's record label in 2014 and became one of its standout talents alongside Tiwa Savage, Korede Bello, and Di'Ja. He officially departed the music imprint in 2018 to build his independent career under his Banks Music label.
Speaking during a recent interview on the EchoRoom podcast, the artiste detailed the realities he encountered immediately after stepping away from the music powerhouse.
"Leaving Mavin Records was premature. I signed a 3 year contract, and stayed extra 2 years after my contract had expired, but as soon as I jumped into the sea, I realized how premature it was," Reekado Banks said.
The musician explained that stepping into total independence forced him to acquire essential business and life skills that were masked by the label's structured operation.
"But I've learned a lot of stuff, patience is one. The ins and outs of it. People who do not have the talent to make music and how they see the talent. I saw so many things I wasn't exposed to in Mavin, because of the structure Mavin has and how stabilized it is," he noted.
Despite the early hurdles, the artiste highlighted that operating as an independent entity over the past ten months has enabled him to achieve key personal milestones outside and within the music industry.
"I was able to learn a lot of stuff. So the last ten months since I had left Mavin, I have been able to achieve many things. Real estate, the restaurant, I have been able to drop an album and headline my show in nine years," Reekado Banks added.
