Nigerian singer-songwriter Adekunle Kosoko, professionally known as Adekunle Gold, has emphasized the critical importance of genotype compatibility in marriage, stating unequivocally that he would not have married his wife, Simi, if her genotype had posed a sickle cell risk.

Speaking on the One 54 Podcast, the award-winning musician stressed that prospective couples must prioritize genetic screening over emotional attachment to prevent passing down Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) to future generations.

"There's so much awareness that needs to be done and that is one of the things that we do," Adekunle Gold shared. "We tell people that once both of you have the sickle cell genes, there is no way that you can marry. Forget love. It makes no sense because you're about to bring a sickly child into the world."

When asked if he would have proceeded with his marriage to fellow music star Simi had their genotypes been incompatible, the singer revealed that checking medical compatibility was their immediate priority when they began dating.

"There is no way I would have done that," he stated. "When we met, the first thing we did was check our genotypes. If we didn't match, we wouldn't have married. She's AA and I'm also AA."

Adekunle Gold and Simi (Simisola Kosoko) married in January 2019 in a private ceremony in Lagos and welcomed their daughter, Deja, in May 2020.
