Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed how a chance encounter following his World Cup performance allowed him to connect his billionaire father, Adedeji Adeleke, with the president of the World Bank to finalize a long-sought deal.
Speaking during an interview on an American radio station, the Unavailable hitmaker described the incident as one of the most defining moments of his life.
Davido explained that while his father had been attempting to reach the head of the global financial institution for years without success, the breakthrough happened unexpectedly in a hotel lobby.
"My dad had been trying to get in touch with the president of the World Bank. He's been trying to get to the guy.
"I was at the World Cup and someone approached me in the hotel and said, ‘Ah Davido, I enjoyed your performance. I'm the president of the World Bank.’ I said, ‘Ooh.’," Davido recalled.
Recognizing the opportunity immediately, the singer placed a video call to his father to make the introduction on the spot.
"I quickly got out my phone and called my dad, ‘Hello daddy. The guy you've been trying to meet is here.’ I gave him the phone and they made the deal," he added. "That was one of the most defining moments of my life."
Davido performed live at the closing ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in December 2022, featured on the tournament's official soundtrack Hayya Hayya (Better Together) alongside Trinidad Cardona and AISHA.
“My dad had been trying to strike a deal with the World Bank president for years but couldn’t meet him. I met him at a hotel after performing at the World Cup, so I immediately called my dad on video, and they made a deal.”
