Why Edo State Govt has banned Davido

The Edo State Government has declared Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, banned from performing in the state for the remainder of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration, according to a report by Instablog9ja.

The declaration was made in a video shared by Peniel TV International, Benin City, featuring Apostle Kassy Chukwu, the Senior Special Assistant on Digital Media to the Edo State Governor.

“You have been banned from coming to Edo State to perform. We don’t want to see you in Edo again,” Chukwu stated.

Chukwu accused the singer of insulting Governor Okpebholo and circulating a manipulated West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result containing "D7" grades belonging to the governor on social media.

“Edo youths are angry. They said if they catch you again, nobody should bring Davido to come and perform in any place again in Edo State,” Chukwu added, warning the musician against sharing such content again.

Background

The controversy stems from the campaign leading up to the August 15 Osun State governorship election. Tensions flared after Governor Okpebholo publicly criticized Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is Davido’s uncle, over his dancing style and leadership approach while campaigning in the state.

In response, Davido shared the disputed WAEC result on his Instagram Story, bringing widespread online attention to the document.

Defending his actions during a subsequent interview, the singer stated that he had no reason to apologize, arguing that he merely exposed the academic record of a leader who traveled outside his own state to campaign against his uncle, while questioning Okpebholo's decision to leave Edo during an election cycle.
