Davido,Wande Coal clash: Fans debate who owns the final say on duet

The brewing disagreement between Nigerian music stars Davido and Wande Coal over their unreleased collaboration has divided music fans on social media, with supporters of both artistes debating who should have had the final say on the song’s release.

The controversy centres on a collaboration that was recorded but never officially released in the form initially anticipated.

Davido recently explained that Wande Coal had approached him to record a verse for the song. According to him, Wande planned to release his version first and subsequently put out the version featuring Davido as a remix.

Davido said he was uncomfortable with the arrangement because he had not recorded his contribution as a remix.

The disagreement eventually meant the collaboration did not see an official release.

Wande Coal has since offered a different perspective, insisting that the song had already been planned for release before Davido’s contribution was added.

In a response that further fuelled the controversy, Wande questioned Davido’s attempt to influence the release strategy of a song he considered his own.

“Song wey been get release plan and date! Song wey no be your own you wan dictate release plan. That song fuckin’ did well without you on it, bruv!” he wrote.

The exchange has since turned into a wider debate among fans, with some arguing that Wande, as the original owner of the song, had the right to determine how and when it should be released.

One social media user, Daniel Regha, argued that Davido had no right to dictate the song’s rollout because he was a featured artist.

Davido has no right whatsoever to disrespect Wande Coal, especially for this. He was featured on the collaboration, and not the other way around,” Regha wrote.

He maintained that Wande’s decision to establish the original version before releasing a remix featuring Davido was a reasonable release strategy.

Another user, mama_maso, however, offered a more measured view, arguing that neither artiste necessarily had an absolute claim over the decision.

“Being a featured artist doesn’t automatically mean you have zero say in a song you’re on, but it also doesn’t mean you can dictate another artist’s rollout,” the user wrote.

According to the commenter, the disagreement could have been handled professionally without becoming a public confrontation.

Another fan also cautioned against reaching a definitive conclusion without knowing the agreement between both artists and their teams.

“Unless Davido’s exact words and the agreement between both teams are known, it’s hard to say for certain that this was simply ego,” the user said, adding that the disagreement should have been handled privately.

The argument has consequently moved beyond the fate of the song to questions about collaboration etiquette in the music industry.

While a featured artist contributes to a record, disagreements can arise over ownership, credits, release dates, promotional strategy and whether a new version should be regarded as the original collaboration or a remix.
