Solidstar calls for quality music over Afrobeats hype

Singer Solidstar has urged Nigerian artistes to prioritise quality music over chasing trends, saying the industry’s heavy focus on Afrobeats is hurting versatility.

In a post on X, the ‘Emergency’ hitmaker, born Joshua Iniyezo, said that many Nigerian musicians have confined themselves to a single genre.

According to him, this over-reliance on Afrobeats has made artistes less experimental and less creative.

Solidstar, who rose to prominence in the late 2000s, recalled that Afrobeats was not the dominant sound when he started in 2009-2010.

He noted that Fuji music was more prominent at the time.

“Nigerian musicians aren’t versatile. Stocked on one genre (AFROBEATS). Nothing like AFROBEATS when I came out fully in 2009/2010, Fuji was even huge! Make dem stop overrating nonsense and start selling good music”, he wrote.
