Nigerian singer Omah Lay has stirred conversations online after revealing the artistes he looks up to musically.
Speaking during a recent Kissxtra interview, the “Soso” crooner listed Wizkid, Burna Boy, Drake, The Weeknd, Bruno Mars, and Harry Styles as his personal “Mount Rushmore” of idols.
“Wizkid is my idol. Burna Boy is my idol. Drake is my idol. The Weeknd is my idol. Bruno Mars and Harry Styles are my idols. These are the people I look up to musically,” he said.
His statement quickly went viral, with many fans praising the blend of Afrobeats heavyweights and global pop stars, noting that it reflects his wide-ranging influences and sound.
However, the revelation also triggered the usual fanbase debates. Wizkid’s FC celebrated his inclusion, with some even calling for support for Omah Lay’s project Clarity of Mind. On the other hand, supporters of Davido questioned his absence, sparking arguments, memes, and conversations around loyalty in the industry.
While some critics dismissed the list or claimed it could change over time, others applauded Omah Lay for being open about his inspirations, especially his recognition of global acts like The Weeknd and Harry Styles.
The singer boasted that he is insanely talented, emphasising that be needs to be creative to be alright.
“I am crazy. My head is not correct. I need to create art to feel good. I am going to be the wealthiest African artiste ever in a few years. I am going to build stuff that would change the world,” he said.
