Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has claimed that social media personality VeryDarkMan would have remained in detention if he had not stepped in during his 2024 arrest.

Speaking on the incident, Sowore recalled the events that unfolded around the Easter period in 2024, when VeryDarkMan’s arrest sparked widespread public attention and intense reactions across social media.

VeryDarkMan would still be in prison if I had not intervened during Easter 2024 when he was arrested,” he said.

The activist, however, did not provide detailed information about the nature of his intervention or the legal steps he took to secure the critic’s release.

The 2024 arrest reportedly stemmed from allegations linked to cyber-related offences, including accusations of cyberbullying and online harassment arising from public commentary on certain individuals.

At the time, VeryDarkMan’s detention by law enforcement authorities quickly became a major talking point in Nigeria’s digital space, with supporters and critics debating both the legality of the arrest and the broader issue of online speech regulation in the country.

The matter later progressed through the courts, and his eventual release drew significant reactions online, further fueling conversations around freedom of expression and digital activism in Nigeria.
