'Poverty na terrible thing' - Nigerians react as Peller's Ibadan cash stunt sparks outrage online

A video from Nigerian TikTok influencer Peller’s stop in Ibadan has triggered widespread backlash online, with many Nigerians expressing discomfort over what they described as a disturbing display.

In the viral clip, Peller is seen inside a moving vehicle throwing ₦500 and ₦1,000 notes onto the street, while people, mostly adult men, ran after the car in a desperate attempt to grab the cash.

The vehicle reportedly did not slow down, heightening both the risk and the intensity of the scene.

What may have been intended as a giveaway quickly drew criticism, with many viewers focusing on the dignity of those involved.

Several reactions pointed out that it was grown men—“someone’s fathers”—chasing after small amounts of money, a sight many described as painful and reflective of deeper economic struggles.

“See people papa Dey collect money… Poverty na terrible thing,” one user wrote, while others accused the influencer of exploiting people’s hardship for content.

Critics argued that turning such moments into entertainment raises ethical concerns, especially when safety is at risk, as individuals ran alongside a moving vehicle for minimal cash.
