'Nigeria's bad economy is affecting streaming revenue' - Sarz

Sarz Sarz

Ace Nigerian producer Sarz, born Osabuohien Osaretin, has shed light on why music streaming earnings in Nigeria are significantly lower than in the United States and other Western countries.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, Sarz explained that the revenue generated from 1 million streams on Spotify in the United States ranges from $3,000 to $5,000. In contrast, the same number of streams in Nigeria brings in roughly $300 to $500, despite marketing and promotional costs being almost identical in both markets.

According to him, the gap in earnings is largely driven by economic differences. Subscribers in Western countries pay significantly higher subscription fees due to stronger economies, which increases the value of streams from those regions.

Sarz noted that while Nigerians are passionate about music and eager to support their favourite artistes, many cannot afford premium streaming subscriptions. As a result, streams from Nigeria carry less monetary value compared to those from wealthier countries.

Addressing the broader issue, the producer said the industry is essentially waiting for economic conditions in the country to improve. He acknowledged that Nigerian entertainers and executives have achieved impressive global success despite limited resources and numerous challenges.

He added that although music consumption remains high across the country, affordability remains a key barrier. For Sarz, real change will depend largely on economic reforms and government intervention to improve citizens’ purchasing power.

Until then, he said, the industry can only hope for a stronger economy that will boost both local streaming revenue and overall growth.
