Nollywood actress Nancy Isime has said rapists and those who lie about rape deserve to face the legal consequences for their actions.
The actress said this in a post on X amid controversy surrounding an alleged sexual assault shared on social media by a young woman named Mirabel.
Isime said, "Justice should be equal. If someone commits rape, they must face the full weight of the law. If someone deliberately lies about rape, they should also face legal consequences. But accusations alone are not proof; evidence is."
Her words come as some sections of the public expressed doubt about Mirabel's story, with her neighbours also dismissing her claims.
However, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has successfully established communication with a close friend of the survivor (Mirabel), who confirmed that she had been discharged from the hospital.
"We sincerely appreciate members of the public who provided helpful information via our direct messages, as well as everyone who tagged the Agency to ensure swift intervention.
"We have since confirmed that the incident occurred in Ogun State and is therefore outside the jurisdiction of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency. In the spirit of interagency collaboration and survivor protection, all relevant information at our disposal has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State.
"We understand that the Ogun State Police Command @OgunPoliceNG is currently handling the matter, and we trust that the survivor will fully cooperate with the appropriate authorities to enable a thorough investigation and due process," the agency said.
