Popular Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, well known as VeryDarkMan, has raised intense online reactions after teaming up with Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti to perform a traditional Yoruba homage at the grave of legendary musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti in Lagos.

In a five-minute video shared online, VeryDarkMan and Seun Kuti were seen at the historic Kalakuta Republic, where they carried out rituals that included ram sacrifices and alcohol libations, practices deeply rooted in Yoruba ancestral veneration common across southwestern Nigeria.

The act was presented as a cultural tribute, aligning with Fela’s well-documented Afrocentric beliefs and spiritual worldview.

However, the footage quickly ignited debate across social media. While supporters described the ritual as a respectful acknowledgment of Fela’s legacy and cultural influence, critics questioned whether the act blurred the line between cultural homage and deification.

Some users argued that honouring a cultural icon through traditional rites does not make him a god, while others expressed discomfort, labeling the display excessive.

@SomebodyGr8t___"People pray for miracles but refuse moral change. Nigerian religion confuses spectacle with spirituality. If hearts remain rotten, how can blessings ever arrive?"
