Fast-rising Nigerian singer and vocalist Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has died following a snake bite at her residence in Abuja, sparking outrage and renewed conversations about emergency healthcare response in Nigeria.

Recounting her final moments, her brother, Kingsley Nwangene, revealed that the singer personally informed him of the incident while she was on her way to seek medical attention.

According to Kingsley, Nanyah called him at about 8:30 a.m. on Saturday to explain that she had been bitten by a snake and was heading to the hospital on her own.

In a bid to slow the spread of the venom, the singer reportedly tied a cloth tightly around her hand before proceeding to Divine Health Hospital in Lugbe, Abuja. However, upon arrival, she was informed that the facility did not have anti-venom, forcing her to seek help elsewhere.

Kingsley said she immediately booked another ride to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, while he remained on the phone with her, desperately reaching out to contacts within the city for assistance.

“She was strong and calm. I stayed on the call with her the entire time,” he recalled.

On arrival at the second hospital, Nanyah was taken into the emergency unit. However, Kingsley expressed concern that valuable time was lost as hospital staff began asking questions instead of promptly administering anti-venom.

He narrated that doctors later removed the cloth tied around her hand and placed her on a drip, reassuring her that she would be fine. Moments later, her condition reportedly worsened.

“She started feeling dizzy, and her speech became unclear,” Kingsley said.

By this time, a family uncle had arrived at the hospital to be with her. Despite hopes that she was finally receiving adequate care, the young singer did not survive.

A devastated Kingsley described his sister’s death as a "systemic failure", lamenting the lack of timely medical intervention and access to life-saving treatment.

Nanyah’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the entertainment community, cutting short the life of a promising artiste who was only beginning to carve a space for herself in the Nigerian music industry.
