Afrobeats queen Tiwa Savage has made a surprising confession about one of Mavin Records’ biggest hits, “Dorobucci.”
In a recent interview with NotJustOk, the award-winning singer revealed that when she first heard the track, she thought it was “such a crap song.”
Tiwa explained that she first listened to the unfinished instrumental while on her wedding vacation in Dubai, where Don Jazzy kept playing it repeatedly in their hotel. Unaware that it was a Mavin project, she quietly dismissed it.
“I don’t know if people know this, but ‘Dorobucci’—I heard Don Jazzy playing it in the hotel when we were in Dubai for my wedding. I didn’t want to tell him, but I thought it was such a crap song,” she recalled.
According to her, Don Jazzy later urged her to cut short her honeymoon and return to Nigeria to work on what would eventually become one of Afrobeats’ most iconic anthems.
“After the wedding, he asked me when I was coming back. I told him we were supposed to go on our honeymoon, but he said, ‘There’s one record, you have to come back to Nigeria.’”
When she finally returned and heard the finished version, Tiwa said she was shocked at how transformed it was.
“I got back to Nigeria and went to the studio. I heard the same song he had played in Dubai, and I was flabbergasted. I was so angry. I don’t know why, because this had happened with Eminado, too. I didn’t like that one at first either.”
Interestingly, Tiwa revealed she was the last Mavin artiste to record her verse on Dorobucci, still unsure about the song’s potential, while her labelmates, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, and D’ija had already jumped on it.
“I was the last person to record my verse. I was just looking at everyone like, ‘Do you guys really like this?’ Everybody had already recorded their parts, and I was the last to jump on it.”
Despite her initial doubts, Dorobucci went on to dominate the charts and become a massive hit across Africa. Tiwa praised **Don Jazzy’s visionary genius, admitting that his ear for hits continues to amaze her.
“We all know what happened to the record. I don’t know what Don Jazzy does, but yeah… I heard it and didn’t want to tell him what I really thought. I was like, ‘Who is he making this song for? Reekado? Korede? D’ija?’ Not knowing I was going to be on it too. And it turned out phenomenal.”
