Buhari died in comfort, that’s not justice' - Seun Kuti slams govt for funding Buhari’s UK treatment

Afrobeats musician Seun Kuti has weighed in on the national discourse following the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, at a medical facility in London.

He is scheduled to be buried at his residence in Daura, Katsina State.

In a video that quickly went viral, Seun Kuti didn’t just call out Nigerians who are celebrating the late president’s death he also made a startling claim about the government’s financial commitment to Buhari’s overseas healthcare.

According to Seun, the Federal Government allegedly paid £3,000 monthly for Buhari’s medical treatment while he was abroad. Drawing attention to Nigeria’s struggling healthcare system, the singer and youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti condemned the contrast between the former leader’s luxurious treatment and the reality faced by ordinary citizens.

He alleged: “I heard it somewhere that while he was in the hospital, where he was for months till his death, the Nigerian government was paying 3,000 pounds monthly till he died. He was taken care of by Nigeria till his old age.”

Seun expressed his displeasure at how public funds were reportedly spent to sustain a former leader outside the country, questioning why the same energy isn’t applied to fix healthcare systems for the masses.

He also criticized those rejoicing online over Buhari’s death, calling it a misguided celebration.

He said: “Now, some of you will come online celebrating like his death is a victory for us. Did you charge him in court for his crime? Why do you think an old man dying of old age is justice?”

For Seun Kuti, real justice would have meant seeing Buhari face trial or accountability while alive. Without that, he argued, the former president’s legacy — and family fortunes — remain untouched.

He concluded that what many see as justice is nothing more than an illusion, offering no real consequence for actions taken in office.
