Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has berated rising artiste Ayo Maff for the "indecent" lyrics in his new song 'Last Week.'
The song's opening verse features the singer boasting about using Canadian Loud, a potent synthetic strain of cannabis, at the beginning of the week and contacting his dealer for more by Saturday.
Reacting to a viral snippet of the song on X, SP Hundeyin expressed his concern about the message conveyed through the lyrics, stating that they promote drug abuse and its associated risks.
He emphasized that many young people in prison might not be there if they had not engaged in drug abuse, highlighting the connection between illicit drug use and crime.
He commented, "He does what on Mondays and Saturdays? Help me listen. Like Asa said, there is fire on the mountain and nobody seems to be on the run. Fact: Half of the young ones in prison today wouldn't be there if they didn't do drugs. Drugs are a precursor to everything bad."
The SP's reaction to the song's lyrics generated mixed reactions from fans and netizens.
Some hailed the singer for his creativity and freedom of expression, while others criticized him for promoting drug abuse and setting a bad example for young people.
The controversy surrounding the song has sparked a wider conversation about the impact of music on society and the responsibility of artists to promote positive messages.
Ayo Maff has yet to respond to SP Hundeyin's criticism, but the debate continues on social media, with many calling for artists to be more mindful of their lyrics and the influence they have on their listeners.
