Popular Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, known professionally as Mayorkun, has issued a reality check to upcoming musicians attempting to emulate Wizkid's reclusive and mysterious brand persona, warning that such a strategy will only cause them to fade into obscurity.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan Podcast, the "Mayor of Lagos" crooner addressed the changing dynamics of the music industry and the pitfalls of new acts isolating themselves from their audience.
Mayorkun noted that while the "mysterious" approach worked for established superstars like Wizkid, emerging talent cannot afford to hide from the public in today's fast-paced digital era.
"Artistes have tried to be mysterious like Wizkid but don’t worry, they’ve learned the hard way. You can’t be a new artiste and be acting mysterious, who are you hiding from?" Mayorkun remarked.
The hitmaker emphasized that constant visibility and active audience engagement are essential for sustaining relevance in modern pop culture, warning that withdrawal from the public eye often leads to career stagnation.
"Its not working again. As they say, out of sight, out of mind. You can try to be mysterious, your mystery will just make you disappear forever," he added.
Traditionally, top-tier Afrobeats stars like Wizkid maintained a high degree of scarcity, relying on rare appearances and minimal social media activity to build anticipation around music releases.
However, contemporary streaming algorithms and social media trends demand continuous engagement from rising talent.
