Popular social media commentator VeryDarkMan has taken a swipe at Afrobeats star Wizkid following his recent comments that placed him in the same conversation as late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Reacting to the comparison, VeryDarkMan argued that Wizkid lacks the originality that defined Fela and even his sons, Femi and Seun Kuti. He questioned the singer’s artistic depth, especially his stage presence, alleging that Wizkid often depends on backing tracks rather than delivering fully live performances.
The critic also claimed that Wizkid’s early success was largely built on sampling existing songs. According to him, Wizkid’s breakout single "Holla at Your Boy" was inspired by an earlier record, adding that several tracks from the singer’s debut era were not entirely original.
VeryDarkMan insisted that comparing Wizkid to Fela was misplaced, stressing that Fela’s legacy was rooted in originality, bold political expression, and commanding live performances — qualities he believes Wizkid does not embody in the same way.
“We are old-school people,” he said, maintaining that Wizkid does not measure up to Fela’s artistic standards and questioning why such comparisons are even being made.
