A Nigerian pastor, Dolapo Lawal, has sparked widespread public debate after advising young men to prioritise acquiring income-generating assets, such as vehicles, over spending upwards of ₦20 million on wedding ceremonies.

In a viral sermon circulated across social media platforms, the cleric noted that a car serves as an essential safety net and business opportunity that can provide immediate income during tough financial times.

"You don't have business spending ₦20 million on a wedding if you don't have a car because right now in Nigeria, a car is a business opportunity. The day you are hungry, you can get vexed and do Uber," the pastor declared.

The preacher called for couples to rather have modest ceremonies with intimate guest lists of 30 to 40 close friends and rather use millions in potential wedding expenditure as capital for their futures.

"You have no business spending ₦15 million or ₦10 million on any wedding. Ladies, are you hearing me? That ₦10 million, let them use it to bless you, the couple," he added.
