World Kidney Day: Famous Nigerians who died of kidney failure

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing problem in Nigeria, presenting challenges to the nation’s health and economy.

The disease which knows no bounds has affected several celebrities globally irrespective of age.

The Nigerian entertainment industry wasn't left out.

Over the years, the industry has been hit with kidney-related deaths with some of these celebrities dying during their peak while others passed on later in their lives.

Some of our favorite actors, composers, writers, musicians, and athletes have died from kidney disease—many of them, far too soon.

As we mark World Kidney Day, we cast the spotlight on some Nigerian celebrities who have died from the disease.

1. OJB Jezreel

Babatunde Okungbowa, popularly known by his stage name OJB Jezreel or OJB, was a Nigerian singer-songwriter and record producer. He died on June 14, 2016 of kidney disease.





2. Muna Obiekwe

Muna Obiekwe was a known face in the industry prior to his death on January 18, 2015. He was the first cousin of popular actor, Yul Edochie.





3. Samuel Adesanya

Known popularly as Pastor Ajidara, Samuel Adesanya reportedly died of kidney failure. The news was confirmed by his wife who said he passed on at an Abeokuta hospital, where he was undergoing dialysis.





4. Prince James Uche

Uche was known for his exemplary performances in movies. The movie star was reported to have died from having diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease in March 2017.

He died two days after his scheduled appointment at the hospital.
