'Why can’t a man wash dishes?' - Teniola Aladese questions household gender roles

Nollywood star Teniola Aladese has reignited discussions on gender roles and household responsibilities, questioning why domestic chores are still predominantly seen as a woman’s duty despite societal and economic shifts.

During a recent podcast, Aladese challenged what she called outdated expectations placed on women in relationships and marriages.

“Why can’t a man wash the dishes? Why do we continue to uphold these gender stereotypes?” she asked. “Women cook, clean, wash plates, while men just focus on work. But women also work. We hustle just like them.”

She pointed out that the imbalance is especially noticeable at home, where women are often expected to manage all domestic tasks in addition to their professional commitments.

“Why is it that as soon as we get home, it’s the woman who has to do everything cook, clean, wash… it’s exhausting!” she said.

Aladese acknowledged that past generations may have accepted such roles, but she emphasized that modern life requires a change in perspective.

“Our mothers may have handled it, but things are different now. Both men and women work. So why can’t men pitch in with chores?” she questioned.

She also highlighted that helping around the house is not a threat to masculinity.

“It’s not about being less of a man; it’s about partnership. These stereotypes need to stop,” she stressed.

Wrapping up, the actress underscored the strain unequal domestic work places on women.

“Women are tired. We work too. Let’s share the load,” she said.

Her remarks have sparked renewed debate on equality at home, shared responsibilities in relationships, and redefining traditional gender norms in contemporary society.
