Nollywood actress and film executive Mary Remmy Njoku has called out what she describes as a persistent gender double standard, questioning why women associated with wealthy men are labeled "gold diggers" while male entourage members benefiting from the same wealth are praised for "brotherhood" and "loyalty".

In a series of social media posts, the ROK TV boss illustrated her point using the scenario of a newly wealthy man returning home surrounded by a large male entourage dependent on his financial support.

"Emeka don blow and came back home. Now 17 grown men are constantly around him, calling themselves 'his boys.' He feeds them, clothes them, pays their bills and takes care of them.

"Nobody says, 'These guys are only around him because of what they can get.' Instead, they call it brotherhood. Networking. Loyalty. But let one woman spend time around that same man, and suddenly everyone becomes an expert on her motives... 'Gold digger.' Interesting."

Expanding on the post, the producer argued that gravitating toward value is a natural human behavior shared by all genders, relatives, and employees alike.

"The double standard isn't that people love money. It's that when men benefit from proximity to wealth, we give the behavior a respectable name. When women do the same thing, we give it a dirty one.

"Everyone loves gold. The difference is in what we choose to call the people standing close to it," she added.
