Why Davido stepped back from #EndSARS protest – Sowore shares shocking reason

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has shared fresh claims about what may have led Afrobeats superstar Davido to distance himself from the 2020 #EndSARS protest movement.

Speaking during an appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Sowore reflected on the nationwide protest against police brutality, alleging that the government was uncomfortable with leaders it could not influence.

According to him, although the movement had visible voices and organisers, authorities were more interested in dealing with figures they could control.

“#EndSARS had leaders, but the problem was that the government didn’t want it to be led by people they cannot control,” Sowore said.

He went on to mention Davido’s role during the protest period, claiming the singer was actively involved in strategy meetings at the time.

Sowore further alleged that the situation changed after Davido travelled to Abuja for a meeting with the then Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.

Davido was attending every #EndSARS meeting. When he got to Abuja to meet with the IGP, before he got upstairs, they were telling him they want to investigate him for the murder of one of his aides. By the time he got upstairs, he said, ‘I didn’t come to Abuja to protest,’” he claimed.

The claims have since reignited conversations around the events that shaped the historic #EndSARS movement in 2020, a protest that drew global attention as Nigerians demanded an end to police brutality and the activities of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
