Nigerian social media critic and activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as Verydarkman, has reacted to the ongoing backlash against Afrobeats star Burna Boy following a controversial incident at one of his US shows.

The uproar began after Burna Boy confronted a female fan who appeared to be sleeping in the front row during his performance, eventually sending her home.

The moment sparked outrage online, with some users calling for a boycott of his concerts.

Several videos showing empty seats at his shows and another clip of a lady sleeping during a tour performance resurfaced, further fueling the controversy.

American boxer Ryan Garcia and streamer N3on also joined the conversation, criticising Burna Boy’s attitude toward fans.

In a detailed response, Verydarkman alleged that much of the outrage was fuelled by coordinated propaganda aimed at damaging the singer’s reputation. According to him, many of the circulating videos were misleading or outdated.

He noted that one particular viral video was recorded during the 2020 EndSARS protest in Abuja, not at a recent concert, and even provided the location to back up his claim. He added that footage of empty seats at Burna Boy’s venues was taken before events began—a common scenario since concerts typically do not start during daylight.

The activist questioned who Burna Boy might have offended to warrant such a wave of negative publicity, stressing that the online attacks do not reflect the attitude of most Nigerians.

However, Verydarkman also addressed the original incident, stating that while he believes the backlash is exaggerated, Burna Boy was wrong to send the lady home and should apologise because she attended the concert out of admiration for him.

He further debunked a supposed post made by the woman, pointing out that the account linked to the message had changed its username more than five times, suggesting it was fake.
