Popular Nigerian activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, to lead a mass protest over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
VeryDarkMan touched down at the Ibadan Airport in Alakia on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, and was welcomed by supporters ahead of the demonstration.
As of the time of filing this report, the activist, alongside his close associate Kokopee and thousands of protesters, had converged at Iwo Road in Ibadan, where they marched through the streets demanding urgent action from authorities.
Videos circulating online showed large crowds chanting slogans such as, “Bandits must go” and “Terrorists must go,” as they called for the safe return of the abducted victims and improved security across the state.
The protest comes in response to the coordinated attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026. Reports indicate that armed bandits stormed multiple schools in the Ahoro-Esinele, Yawota, and Alawusa communities, abducting dozens of students and teachers.
According to community leaders and local reports, as many as 46 people were kidnapped during the attacks, including 39 pupils and students—some reportedly as young as two years old—and seven teachers, among them a school principal.
The affected schools were Community Grammar School in Esiele, Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, and L.A. Primary School.
The incident turned deadly after one teacher was reportedly shot and killed during the initial attack. Days later, another victim, 57-year-old mathematics teacher Michael Oyedokun, who had been taken hostage, was reportedly killed by his captors, further fueling public outrage.
The tragedy sparked nationwide condemnation and drew reactions from various groups, including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which called for stronger measures to secure schools and protect educators.
Thousands of residents joined VeryDarkMan's protest in Ibadan, with participants demanding the immediate rescue of the remaining victims and a decisive crackdown on banditry and terrorism in the region.
The demonstration is one of the largest public mobilizations seen in Oyo State in recent months, reflecting growing frustration over insecurity and the prolonged captivity of the abducted students and teachers.
