Social critic and Ratel president, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has reacted to the life imprisonment verdict given to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, describing the judgment as a deliberate distraction and a tool to divide Nigerians.
Kanu’s case, which dragged on for four years, ended with a life sentence, a decision that immediately sparked nationwide reactions from citizens and public figures.
In a video posted on Instagram, VDM argued that the ruling came at a time when insecurity in the country had reached alarming levels.
He said Nigerians across all religious and ethnic groups, Christians, Muslims, traditionalists, Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, are united in their frustration because “terrorism affects everyone.”
VDM claimed there was never a realistic chance Kanu would be released immediately, insisting that only a “delusional person” would expect the activist to walk free.
He predicted that Kanu might spend up to 20 years in detention but not a lifetime, adding that the case was being used to divert public attention from pressing security issues.
The activist also demanded President Bola Tinubu’s resignation if he cannot secure the release of the schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State, stating that Nigerians are “surrounded by terrorists.”
He referenced Kanu’s past warnings about insecurity, saying the IPOB leader “sacrificed himself for a lot of people.”
VDM urged young Nigerians not to allow the government to use Kanu’s case to divide them along ethnic or political lines.
He also advised those travelling for the December holidays to demand armed security from transport companies, warning that any company unable to guarantee safety should be avoided.
