American actor, Tom Cruise, is set to embark on a journey to space to shoot a movie in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration - NASA.

Confirming the report, NASA's administrator tweeted on Tuesday that the body is "excited" to work with Tom Cruise to make a movie on the International Space Station.

A NASA spokesperson also confirmed to CNN Business that Cruise will launch into space and stay aboard the station, a multibillion-dollar laboratory that orbits about 250 miles above Earth.

"We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA's ambitious plans a reality," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a tweet Tuesday.

According to US outlet Deadline, it was revealed that Cruise and Elon Musk's SpaceX were in the early stages of collaborating with NASA on the "the first narrative feature film -- an action-adventure -- to be shot in outer space."

Sky News reports that although the movie will not be another Mission Impossible sequel, the plot has not been disclosed.
