Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy has reignited the long-running debate over the country’s so-called “Big 3” after declaring that he should be considered a category of his own.
During a performance, the Grammy-winning artiste told fans: “Next time anybody tells you about the ‘Big 3’, tell them there’s only the ‘Big 2’, and then there’s Burna Boy.”
The remark has resurfaced amid renewed discussions about the hierarchy of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
The “Big 3” label is commonly used to describe Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido, who have dominated conversations about Nigeria’s global Afrobeats success over the past decade. Burna Boy, however, has previously rejected being grouped with the other two stars, making the same “Big 2 and Burna Boy” declaration in January 2024.
His latest comments come months after Nigerian music legend 2Baba weighed in on the same debate. In February 2026, 2Baba said Burna Boy was “on top of the game right now”, placing him ahead of Wizkid and Davido based on his assessment of the current music landscape.
