The Family, The Party, and The Fallout: Why Davido is back in the political shooting range

Afrobeats megastar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, is no stranger to trending topics.

However, the latest online storm surrounding the music icon is not about music streams or stadium tours; it centers on a political plot twist that has left fans, political commentators, and social media activists deeply divided.

At the heart of the current wave of reactions is the recent appointment of Davido's uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign council.

Now, the global star finds himself at the center of a debate concerning family loyalty, political strategy, and public accountability.

The Background:

During the lead-up to the Osun State governorship election, Davido was a central figure on the campaign trail. Mobilizing hundreds of thousands of young followers across social media and on the ground, the singer vocally backed his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, while criticising the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the time, Davido explicitly declared that he could never support the APC, framing the election as a battle for good governance.

The political landscape, however, shifted dramatically following the official inauguration of President Tinubu’s expanded 2027 Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja.

In a move that surprised many observers, Governor Adeleke was named as a state campaign coordinator alongside other non-APC figures like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Taking the stage in Abuja, Governor Adeleke embraced his new role with characteristic energy, declaring that "nobody can stop this movement" and pledging to lead the charge for the President's second term.

The announcement sent shockwaves through West African digital media, placing Davido at the center of the raging storm.

The Two Rival Theories

As online backlash mounts against the singer, political commentators and pop culture observers have split into two distinct camps:

1. The "Smokescreen" Allegation: Strategic Deception

Critics, led by vocal public commentators like social media activist VeryDarkMan (VDM), argue that the entire campaign was an elaborate political illusion.

According to this view, Governor Adeleke’s anti-APC posturing was designed to absorb opposition votes and create a false sense of a third-party alternative in Osun State.

This perspective also states that Davido was fully aware of the plan and used his massive cultural clout to package a pre-arranged political deal as a populist triumph.

2. The "Family Blindspot"

Conversely, defenders and sympathetic fans argue that Davido’s actions were driven strictly by family devotion rather than calculated political deception.

In West African culture, backing a family member during a high-stakes campaign is an expected social obligation.

Proponents of this view maintain that the singer was not aware of the plan but was simply a loyal nephew amplifying his uncle's platform, unaware that the political landscape would shift toward a coalition with the very party he publicly condemned.

Silence

Despite the resurfacing of his past anti-APC tweets and fiery callouts from commentators, Davido has chosen not to issue a formal rebuttal or policy statement.

Instead, the megastar shared a brief, upbeat video on his Instagram Story showing Governor Adeleke singing and dancing.

Dangers of political support:

The political saga, however, has shown a growing frustration about celebrity endorsements in African politics.

High-profile artistes who lend their brand to political figures risk taking part of the blame when the politicians disappoint the masses.

Whether Davido was a key strategist in a complex political game or a loyal family member caught in a political maneuver, one fact remains clear, the line between Afrobeats stardom and partisan politics has never been more treacherous.
