'Solve the burden of food costs and you solve Nigeria's problems!' - Chef T

Popular Nigerian culinary expert Chef T has highlighted the severe strain of rising food prices on ordinary citizens, stating that eliminating the cost of feeding would solve a major portion of the average Nigerian's daily struggles.

Speaking during a recent podcast appearance, the chef expressed alarm over the drastic increase in food prices over recent years.

Reflecting on the impact of inflation on household budgets, Chef T pointed to the price hike of basic food items to illustrate how much purchasing power has eroded.

"I used to buy a carton of turkey at ₦15,000, far back in 2018. Now a carton of turkey is going for ₦100-and-something thousand Naira. Same quantity, same everything.

"So we get the bare minimum for expensive. It's crazy. Even down to bread for a family to feed," Chef T stated.

To cushion the economic hardship, the chef revealed that she ensures all her domestic staff are fully fed in her household twice daily, eliminating their personal food costs so they can redirect their salaries toward other pressing needs.

"If you take away the burden of the cost of feeding from a typical Nigerian person, most of their problems have been solved.

"So I try to make sure that the same way we feed in my family is the same way they feed. There's no discrimination... Because once you've taken the burden of feeding from people like that, a lot of their problems are solved," she added.

Nigeria has faced sharp food inflation over recent years, driven by currency devaluation, fuel subsidy removal, supply chain disruptions, and high transportation costs, making basic food items increasingly unaffordable for low-income earners.

Domestic workers and low-wage earners in urban centers like Lagos spend a major portion of their earnings on basic nutrition.
