Social media bill aimed at silencing dissenting voices - Kate Henshaw

Actress Kate Henshaw has said that there is a hidden agenda by the Nigerian government over the social media bill currently before the National Assembly.

The actress made this known while joining other celebrities in taking a stand against the “Social Media Bill” at an event organized by rapper M.I Abaga.

The bill which has passed its second reading is tagged “A Bill for an Act to make provisions for the protection from internet falsehood and manipulations and for related matters, 2019”.

According to Kate Henshaw who is also a politician, there is no need to create new law when there are other laws in existence to help address all possible crimes committed using social media.

“In fact, cybercrime Act 2015 which was assented by former president Goodluck Jonathan in was so broad that it provided room for abuse and ‘Enough is Enough’, Paradigm Initiatives and Media Right Agenda are challenging the Section 24 of the Act at the Supreme court”, she said.

“Why should someone be punished because some set of people misinterpreted information wrongly? She asked.

“Our existing laws are enough to address all possible crimes in using social media, why do we need to create a new one to silence dissenting voices if they have nothing to hide,” she added.
