Six top Nigerian celebrities who were choristers

Music is synonymous with church choir ministration for some people and it has helped many Nigerian celebrities in their journey to fame.

In this article, Naija News highlights some Nigerian music stars who you probably didn’t know started their music career from the church as choristers.

1. Waje

Aituaje Iruobe, professionally known as Waje, gained recognition after being featured on the remake of P-Square’s “Omoge Mi”. She started singing in church and was temporarily suspended from singing in her church choir for getting pregnant outside of marriage.

She sang gospel tunes to the delight of the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa who was quite impressed with her singing.

2. Wizkid

Ayodeji Ibrahim, better known as Wizkid, began singing at age 11 in his church choir. He later released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five (5), a group he and a couple of his church friends formed.

3. Wande Coal

Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe popularly known as Wande Coal started singing in the teenage choir at his church. He got his first break in the Nigerian entertainment industry as a dancer and got signed to Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits Records in 2006.

4. Simi

Simisola Bolatito Kosoko popularly known as Simi, started her music career as a gospel singer, releasing her debut studio album in 2008, titled Ogaju.

5. Timaya

Inetimi Timaya Odon professionally known as Timaya, revealed during an interview with Ndani TV that he started his music career at the church before starting up as a backup for Eedris Abdulkareem for three years.

6. Terry G

Gabriel Oche Amanyi popularly known Terry G, started singing in the choir of his local church. The ‘Akpako master’, as he is fondly called, received critical acclaim for his unique brand of music and personality.
