Founder of Living Faith Church Worldwide, popularly known as Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has raised concerns over the growing presence of fraudsters across all sectors of society, including religious institutions.
Speaking during a midweek church service, the respected cleric shared a recent experience in which an individual allegedly impersonated him in a bid to scam people. He described the incident as a clear sign of the troubling times the nation is facing.
According to Bishop Oyedepo, the impersonator contacted one of his aides while pretending to be him and made certain requests in his name.
“We once had a situation where someone claimed to be me and said I was asking for something,” he told the congregation.
The attempt failed after the aide chose to verify the request before acting on it.
“My assistant asked if the person wanted to speak to me. When he said yes, he was connected, and it became obvious immediately that the person was lying,” the bishop explained.
He added that the impersonator was quickly exposed and, in the process of trying to defend himself, further revealed his deceit.
Using the incident as a warning, Bishop Oyedepo noted that fraudulent activities have become more daring and are no longer limited to marketplaces or offices.
“These things are happening everywhere now — in schools, offices, and even in churches,” he warned.
The cleric urged worshippers and members of the public to remain alert at all times, stressing the need to verify information before responding to any request, regardless of who it claims to come from.
“Stay grounded in the truth, and you will not fall victim,” Bishop Oyedepo advised.
