Rema makes massive win as Burna Boy loses three awards at 2023 MTV EMAs

Fast-rising Afrobeats singer Rema has emerged as the first winner of the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards' "Best Afrobeats" category.

French superstar Aya Nakamura and Nigerian artistes Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema were among the initial nominees.

It should be mentioned that for the 2023 ceremony, the event organizers included a new category called "Best Afrobeats."

Although the Israel-Hamas conflict forced the cancellation of the award ceremony, the winners were nonetheless announced on Monday, November 6, 2023.

Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz won the title of "Best African Act," while Rema was voted the winner of "Best Afrobeats."

Rema's "Calm Down" with Selena Gomez lost to Jung Kook and Latto in the "Best Collaboration" category.

However, despite Rema's big win, Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy was not able to win "Best Afrobeats," "Best African Act," or "Best Live Performer."

This happened not long after he lost all seven of his 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards nominations.

At the 2023 MTV EMAs, Taylor Swift took up three medals, including "Best Video," "Best Artist," and "Best Live," to lead the list of winners.
