Popular comedian and skit maker Sabinus has cautioned Nigerians against defaming brands and celebrities on social media, urging them to think of the legal and financial consequences their words could bring on their families.

In a post on his X handle, the comedian questioned why some users appear so careless about their personal freedom.

"Is it that you people don't value your freedom because the way you defame brands and celebrities on this app surprises me on top this country wey hard," he wrote.

He went on to appeal to them to consider their parents' struggles, warning that legal troubles could drain resources meant for basic needs.

"Make una dey pity una parents wey still dey suffer. Money wey dem suppose use chop, dem go use am dey pursue police case," he added.

His comment comes amid a growing number of arrests and lawsuits involving social media users over posts about public figures and companies.

Earlier in September, the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre arrested 27-year-old X influencer Hafsat Abubakar over a forged document that falsely claimed fintech firm OPay was shutting down.

She was picked up on September 4 after OPay filed a formal petition on August 31.

Sabinus has been vocal about online defamation before.

In 2025, he called out bloggers for what he described as tarnishing celebrities' images without evidence, and in April 2026 the EFCC dismissed a viral fake "wanted" poster bearing his image as false.
