Gospel music disc jockey and an ambassador for the Christian Broadcasting Network’s The 700 Club Nigeria, Ernest Esekhile, aka DJ Ernesty, has said that passion for spreading gospel was what spurred him to become a DJ.

He said, “Passion for spreading the gospel through music drove me into becoming a gospel DJ, especially at a time when gospel DJ was relatively new to people. Christian events should not be moody but people should be entertained in the Lord. I am very much interested in bringing joy, laughter, happiness and positivity to people through music. This is particularly so because people are living in challenging times.”

On what one needs to be a successful Gospel DJ, Ernesty said, “DJs first need to learn the craft very well, have vast knowledge of music and technology application, be a very good crowd controller to perceive what the audience wants to hear at a given time and interact with your audience while playing.”

The disc jockey also stated that he usually did a lot of research to keep abreast of trends in the industry. He said, “Research is an important aspect of disc jockeying. I do a lot of research on the latest songs released. I also follow up on gospel artistes and listen to songs majority of people listen to.”

Asked what he considered the most rewarding part of being a DJ, he said, “One gets to listen to a lot of music before it is officially out. One also gets to make events colourful and entertaining. Making people dance to different music and maintaining the tempo; controlling different types of music in a place comes with so much responsibility and it’s really fulfilling at the same time. Also, being a DJ makes one meet different people from different works of life who share similar excitement about music.”
