Popular Nigerian food critic Opeyemi Famakin has expressed concern over his safety after alleging that he received threatening messages following a heated online exchange with socialite Yhemolee.
The controversy began after Famakin reviewed a luxury perfume linked to Yhemolee’s wife’s brand. While he gave the fragrance a favourable 7.5/10 rating, he criticised the bottle’s print quality, noting that it fell short for a product priced at ₦160,000.
The review triggered a backlash from Yhemolee, who responded with insults, escalating the disagreement online.
As the exchange gained traction, Famakin shared a video raising alarm over messages he claimed were sent by individuals identifying as members of a confraternity. According to him, the messages warned him about “crossing” one of their own, prompting concerns about possible physical harm.
Questioning the intent behind the threats, Famakin stated that he is not affiliated with any cult group and lives as a law-abiding civilian. Referencing the late singer Mohbad, he asked Nigerians whether the messages should be interpreted as a serious danger to his life.
The video has since gone viral, drawing mixed reactions from the public. While some urged the critic to take the threats seriously and seek police intervention, others downplayed the situation, describing it as an online dispute that went too far.

@Optimus_Dracula__"Any other person could have said same thing and they wouldn’t be running all over the place. But because they know this Ope guy has reach and his opinion about the Perfume can influence people reason for their crashing out.
By the way he actually went and bought the perfume for that review so Thats money invested into their business, they are silly if they plan on going after him.
PS: I do not particularly like this Ope guy either."
@12spillz___"Real 💯good talk!!! I like the fact he defended himself
Yhemo de allow woman push am and he overreacted"
@_LadyVictoria__"I like how he kept the f!ght btw them men and respected the wife."
@SarahIkhami__"Emotion is the reason why the country is where it is today. You can like a person and be objective. If he had lied and more people bought it and they didn't like it, they'll still come out to drag Ope saying he's a liar."
@Mr_DorianGrey___"I read a lot of comment and nobody inspiring out to the fact that this guys just demystified himself (not that people haven’t seen through him) by himself and online. He openly admitted that with influence and with a fee he can rate a product higher than the ablsoluye value."
@UtdAben18___"The bottomline, I would not trust a brand that handles criticism like this. Whether Ope' s opinions are founded or not , I can't trust that brand."
@JessicaIbe87876___"Yhemo was wrong for actually coming out him, ope was just promoting his wife business and telling them few branding errors. It was so petty of him to insult ope. For free ads. This Lagos people sef."
