Veteran Nigerian comedian and actor Okey Bakassi has vehemently debunked viral social media reports claiming that his marriage of 25 years has ended in divorce.
The rumors, which circulated online on Monday, alleged that the actor's wife had filed for divorce 15 years after he relocated her and their children to the United States to study nursing while he remained in Nigeria to support the family financially.
Reactions swift and sharp, the veteran entertainer took to his official Instagram page in a video statement to set the record straight, slamming the reports as completely fabricated by clout-chasers.
"Please, my wife and I are still together, God forbid anything will ever happen to us. Someone was busy on social media trying to disrespect me and my family. One idiot, one charlatan went on social media and created an article with my name, my picture with that of my wife on it. Alleging that we have gone our separate ways," Okey Bakassi declared.
The comedian expressed frustration over the anxiety the fake report caused among his loved ones across the globe, emphasizing that key details in the viral story were entirely false.
"Since then, friends, family and fans have been calling me and my wife from all over the world with this troubling news. We just celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in Canada. Those of you who are close to me know that my wife does not live in the US and she’s not a nurse as reported by the author of that article," he explained.
Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule, widely known as Okey Bakassi, is a pioneer of modern Nigerian stand-up comedy and a seasoned Nollywood actor, known for maintaining a relatively private family life over his decades-long career.
