Nigerian skit maker and social commentator Mr Macaroni has responded after an old interview clip, in which he spoke about receiving threats over his political commentary, resurfaced online and went viral.

The clip, shared by X user @carter8f, quotes Mr Macaroni saying: "I stopped talking about the government because I was receiving so many threats, and my family wasn't safe. My mom would call me crying that there is strange movements around the house. They wanted to fly me out, but I said, 'No, I'm staying.'"

Reacting on X, Mr Macaroni clarified that the interview was recorded over two years ago and that the accompanying headline was misleading, though he maintained that the points he made remain valid.

He went on to redirect attention to a separate concern, what he described as Nigerians' tendency to quickly move past pressing issues after venting online.

"My issue with us as Nigerians is how we move on quickly. We complain and move on. There is nothing I will say now that I haven't already said a hundred times over.

"Until we as a people are ready to fight for what is ours, saying the same thing over and over again is just TIRING," he added.

The resurfaced clip appears to stem from remarks Mr Macaroni made in past interviews, in which he explained why he scaled back his political commentary, citing threats tied to his activism, including his involvement in the #EndSARS protests in 2020 and #OccupyLekkiTollGate demonstration in 2021.

In more recent interviews, he has also spoken about being labelled "troublesome" by the same Nigerians he speaks up for, and why he remains hesitant to pursue a career in politics, describing the political space as one that "corrupts the very best of us."
