Popular Nigerian gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has commented on the unfortunate situation of the Super Eagles team being stranded at the Al-Abaq Airport ahead of their return match in the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.
Reports indicate that the team's chartered flight was originally headed for Benghazi Airport but was diverted to a different location mid-air.
The treatment of the Super Eagles team and officials has sparked concern, especially after Libya complained about being poorly treated during their visit to Nigeria for the first leg.
Nathaniel Bassey expressed his disappointment, deeming the situation unfortunate and unacceptable. He thanked God for the safety of the team, emphasizing that things could have taken a turn for the worse if not for divine intervention.
The gospel singer urged the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and the Federal Government (FG) to swiftly address the issue and conduct a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served.
He wrote, "First and foremost, I thank God for bringing our boys back home safely. Because this thing we just heard, from the little I know about aviation, is actually very very troubling and could easily have turned south. I mean, how in the world could you do this? What score did you try to settle that you could not do any other way? @caf and @fifa MUST of necessity investigate this and apply the requisite sanctions. The world cannot afford such reckless and vile behaviour. Our federal government MUST also take this up. Even if it means redefining our diplomatic and political ties with Libya. Good forbid that we woke up to a disaster. GOD FORBID! This sort of people could easily have flipped the story. I mean, the only way to explain this is to say that there was clearly a malicious intent against us. Even if it’s for the sake of others, we cannot let this slide."
