Social media have reacted to reports that veteran comedian Basketmouth has ended his 12-year-old marriage to his wife, Elsie.

In a social media post on Thursday, December 22, Basketmouth called on the general public to respect their decisions as they begin their separate lives apart.

He wrote: “As much as it pains me to bring my personal life to the public space, this is an unavoidable situation. After much deliberations, my wife and I have made the difficult decision to end our marriage.

“As we move forward seperately, we will continue to work together to give our beautiful children all the care, love guidance and support they need. We humbly ask that you respect our privacy as we navigate through these times.”

Reactions on social media have been varied.

See some comments below:

Oluwanishola Akeju: "This isn’t good. Marriage isn’t this difficult. Or should I say, some are lucky! Wish you and your ex wife well"

Ezeh Angie: "Oh dear! Didn't see this one coming. Marriage is no one's mate. If you can't compromise and mutually love one another, you are on a long thing as this is no longer the years of our mothers and of our forefathers. I wish them all the best and praying the innocent children don't get disturbed by it"

Moses Gargba: "You guys should think in line with pls. I remember this particular write up with same language, same font size, same spacing and the same dark background was from Seyi law sometime ago. But come to think of it, how come it’s in a picture form both from Instagram, Twiter and Facebook? Where did he posted the actual write up before screenshoting it to post on other social media handle as a picture? I pray my thoughts shouldn’t fail me because this is really becoming too common with our celebrities who are supposed mentors to the younger generation.
May we marry not to divorce"

Pius Efe Emoghene: "Try and settle your differences bro, because there are vultures a hyenas that are watching and waiting to reap where they didn't plant"

Lizzy Paul: "Kai! This isn't good news at all."

Chanoda Frackson Ngwira: "You have done well other than killing each other"
