Veteran actress, Shaffy Bello, has stirred controversy following her take on prostitution.
In a recent interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown posted on YouTube, Bello revealed that she understands if one has to engage in prostitution to make ends meet, especially if it is what such a person can cope with at that point in life. She, however, advised people not to remain in such a situation for too long.
“There are so many people out there that need my voice to hear that the seeds that you sow matter. That need to hear you don’t have to show your boobs to be sexy or shake your bum to go viral or get attention. And if what you are doing right now is being a runs girl to make money, I understand it. If you be ashewo, do it well and with respect, do it but don’t stay there. You are more than that,” she opined.
Speaking further, Shaffy revealed why she has not considered venturing into movie production at this time. She said, “I am an actor and every actor doesn’t have to be a producer. I face my lane and do what God asks me to do to have an impact. If God gives you the grace to be a producer and do films, run with it but right now, that’s not what He called me to do. See what I’m doing here, when you guys hear Shaffy Bello, you will never forget how you felt in this room. That’s the gift He gave me.”
Shedding light on how she maintains her brand and constantly shows up looking put together, Bello revealed that it is natural for her and not something she learnt.
“I was born with it, it’s not a skill. There are some things you cannot teach. It is just in you. There are some people who are into looking good on the exterior. Some people are not, they look great within. They are great people, they have great charisma but they are not into putting on dresses and makeup. It doesn’t change who you are so for me it is who I am but I think the biggest thing is the energy. It doesn’t matter what I look like, any room I walk into, you will always feel that energy. You will feel it because I feel love. I carry it.”
Bello’s controversial take divided fans who disagreed with her support for prostitution. Taking to social media, some fans shared their opinions in the comments.
An Instagram user, Prince Jama, asked, “How does one do Ashawo with respect and dignity? That’s funny.”
Another user, Lily touch wrote, “I understand her tho. She’s not advising you to do it but no matter what you say, some people will still do it . All She’s saying is; if it’s a must you do it , Don’t stay there.
Emma Forever stated, “How can you be an ashawo with dignity? This is such a weird discourse. You don’t need to give advice on everything.”
Another Instagram user, Nnanna, stated, “Imagine the kind of advice modern women are giving to their fellow women.”
On her part, another Instagram user, Becee Ugboh wrote, “She said exactly what I would have said which is the absolute truth! She spoke with wisdom and people understood her well. We just like to twist things to make people look bad!”
Meanwhile, in a follow-up video posted on Instagram, Afolabi-Brown clarified that Bello’s statement was not intended to endorse prostitution.
“My show is for joy, peace and light. When I bring guests, the intention is for them to be celebrated. Yes, she made a statement concerning prostitution, but the intention was not to endorse prostitution. It was just to highlight that there are people who find themselves in that lifestyle for whatever reason,” she said.
“We watch movies of people born into the life of mafia and criminality. That’s all they know, they don’t have many options. She is saying, ‘I see you, however, don’t stay there.’ How is that endorsement?”
