Veteran Nollywood actor and lawyer Kanayo O. Kanayo has called for further reforms in the Nigeria Police Force after spending 10 days in Ghana for a movie production.
In a video shared online, the actor revealed that he and his colleagues travelled between filming locations, including Takoradi, without encountering a police checkpoint during their stay.
Kanayo observed that police officers were present on Ghanaian roads but appeared to operate strategically rather than stopping motorists at frequent checkpoints.
He commended the Inspector-General of Police for efforts to reform the Nigerian police but urged the leadership to address misconduct by officers who damage the force's reputation.
The actor also expressed concern about young Nigerians being treated as suspected internet fraudsters simply because they drive expensive cars. He stressed that many young people earn legitimate incomes through technology, entrepreneurship and other businesses.
Speaking from his legal perspective, Kanayo acknowledged police officers' authority to conduct searches but questioned stops that lack reasonable justification.
He urged the police leadership to reduce unnecessary checkpoints, improve officers' conduct and strengthen public trust in the institution. He also praised hardworking officers who risk their lives to protect Nigerians.
Kanayo concluded by emphasising that the Nigeria Police Force belongs to all Nigerians and should serve the public professionally and fairly.
