Nollywood actress Lilian Afegbai has issued a public apology following her outburst over being snubbed in the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nominations.

On March 31, shortly after the AMVCA nominee list was released, Afegbai expressed frustration at her exclusion, insisting she deserved a nomination for her role as Idia in the movie To Kill A Monkey. In a now-deleted tweet, she controversially told the organisers to “eat their award.”

However, in a statement released on Saturday, the actress admitted her reaction was inappropriate.

“That tweet should not have happened. No excuse. It was disrespectful to AMVCA, the nominees, my To Kill A Monkey family, and all of you who have supported me,” she said.

Afegbai explained that her reaction stemmed from disappointment and personal pain. “Honestly, I was disappointed. But that’s not an excuse for how I responded. When I wasn’t nominated, I reacted from a place of hurt and entitlement. I was wrong, and I am sorry.”

She added that her role in To Kill A Monkey was a significant milestone in her career, which made the snub feel particularly painful.
