'Is it today they have been kidnapping people in their homes?' Seyi Law under fire over comment

Comedian and politician Oluwaseyitan Aletile, well known as Seyi Law, has come under fire after a clip from a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast went massively viral.

In the heated discussion about national security under President Bola Tinubu, the comedian made a statement that many Nigerians have labelled tone-deaf and insensitive:

“Nigeria is safer now than 10 years ago. This government has killed more bandits since Jonathan’s. When last did you hear of a bomb blast? It is not today that they have been kidnapping people in their houses,” he said.

The moment, which has been clipped, shared, and meme’d across X, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, shows Seyi Law defending the current administration while co-host Daddy Freeze and others push back.

He argued that while kidnappings happen, they are not a “new” phenomenon tied to Tinubu’s government, pointing to the evolution from highway ambushes to home invasions.

But for millions of Nigerians living with daily fear of bandits, ransom demands, and sudden abductions, the comment landed like a slap. The backlash has been swift, brutal, and unrelenting.

How Nigerians are Rracting

Social media has been on fire since the clip surfaced. The dominant mood? Outrage mixed with disappointment from people who once enjoyed Seyi Law’s comedy.

BBNaija star Vee Iye didn’t hold back. Quoting the exact line, she fired:

“It’s not today that they have been kidnapping people in their house. A perfect example of a desensitised Nigerian citizen who can’t see past his own pockets.”

Her post quickly racked up thousands of people agreeing with her comments, calling Seyi Law “lost to stomach infrastructure.”

Another X user (@Chryx) said,“Seyi Law should stick to comedy. People are being kidnapped daily, villages attacked, and soldiers killed. Saying Nigeria is safer now is an insult to victims of insecurity.”

@Kensman, siad_____“It’s totally insulting and tone-deaf… this isn’t a punchline of his dead career, it’s people’s lives.”

another said,____“One day he will be a victim, and I pray no Nigerian comes to his aid.”
