The Igbo community in Ghana held its annual Igbo Day/Yam Festival on Sunday, September 19 at East Legon in Accra.

The yam festival is celebrated yearly among Nigerians across the world to promote the Nigerian culture in the diaspora.

The event was organized by the Igbo community leader in Accra, Ghana; Dr Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu and the entire Ndigbo Palace Elders.

This year’s yam festival (ninth edition) brought together several Nigerians including the Yoruba’s and other tribes in Nigeria to thank God for a fruitful season.

Dr Ihenetu as the Igbo community leader in Accra stated that the yam festival is a heritage of the Igbos which was inherited from their great grandfathers and therefore, they are honouring the tradition.

During his speech he thanked the people of Ghana for their support towards the Nigerian community and promised to continue to adhere strictly to the laws of the country.

“I assure the people of Ghana that the Igbo community in Ghana will abide by the rules and regulations of this town and ensure business flourish in Ghana. We did not come to Ghana to bring problem to Ghana but we came to Ghana to be part of the progress of this country,” he said.
