Nigerian music superstar Tiwa Savage has refuted ongoing claims that Afrobeats is experiencing its lowest moment in 20 years.
Music industry figures, such as Paul Okoye (Paulo) and DJ Big N, have recently suggested in interviews and online discussions that the genre is losing momentum. But Savage strongly disagrees.
Speaking at the Unstoppable Africans event, the award-winner asserted that Afrobeats continues to thrive, dominating global charts, touring stages, and expanding its cultural influence.
Savage reflected on her upbringing in London, noting that she once felt ashamed of her African identity. Today, she proudly embraces her roots due to the global rise of Afrobeats and the positive image it now gives to the continent.
She emphasized that the genre’s success is even more impressive considering the lack of early industry support and structure.
“Afrobeats is the fastest-growing genre in the world,” she declared. “We built this from nothing, no infrastructure, no support, no belief.”
“There was a time they said Afrobeats would have just 15 minutes of fame, but look at us now, selling out stadiums and topping charts.”
Savage added that the strength of the African and Nigerian population alone proves that the sound will only continue to grow.
“We are Africans and we are unstoppable,” she concluded confidently.
